A Day in the Life- Exercising Together

Post by Shannon

Patrick and I like to exercise together. Lately we've been running together on Saturdays. Patrick has been helping me train for my half marathon in March. It is fun running together and talking about the previous week. There is a always a lot to talk about.

We also like doing workouts together at home like P90X or P90X2, or going to the gym together. When it is warm we also like going to the park and kicking the soccer ball with our 2-year-old daughter.

It is fun to find something active you can do with your spouse or family. What do you like to do?

WEEKEND CHALLENGE- Drink more water!

The Weekend Challenge is to drink more water!

Most people do not drink enough water each day. Our bodies are made up of 60% water and so we need to continually put water into our bodies to keep them working properly.

The Mayo Clinic wrote a great article about this. Click on this link to read the full article:

In the article, they said men need roughly 3 liters (13 cups) a day and women need 2.2 liters (about 9 cups) a day.

So this weekend take our challenge and drink more water! Let us know how it goes!

Workout Review: Turbo Fire!

Post by Shannon

Every Thursday we do a review of a Beachbody workout. This week is Turbo Fire! Click on the link or picture to see a video of the workout.

I started Turbo Fire on January 2. It is a fun, upbeat workout by Chalene Johnson! It is a 20-Week program. I love it so far! It is challenging and fun at the same time. If you like kick boxing, dance or aerobics, this is a good one for you!

Here are a few facts:

- 12 workouts on 10 DVDs that range from 10 to 55  minutes
- It comes with a Lower Body Band, an awesome nutrition guide and a Stretch band
- There is a 90-Day Money Back Guarantee
- Everything you need is included in the kit so you don't need to buy extra equipment
- There are "new to class" workouts to help you learn the steps
- The workouts help you burn fat and get leaner

Overall, this is a fun, upbeat workout! I recommend it!

2 Cloves garlic, crushed
1 Tbsp. olive oil

Boil water and cook pasta according to package directions. In a second pan, steam zucchini, cauliflower, and broccoli until heated through but still slightly crisp. A Day in the Life- Meal Planning

Post by Shannon

Eating five times a day can be difficult, especially when you are busy and on the go.

Something we do to help us eat healthy foods throughout the day is plan our meals each week. We use a a white board that has a calendar on it so we can reuse it each week.

First, we plan out our meals. We like to use a mix of recipes from Beachbody's meal plans (P90X, Insanity, Turbo Fire, etc.), the Biggest Loser cookbooks, the Sparkpeople cookbook and a few others. Once we have our meals and snacks planned, we write a list and go shopping. We usually do this on Saturday so we have it for the whole week.

Sometimes we go to the store during the week, but we try to go once and have everything we need for the week.

This has helped us eat healthy and stay organized. What do you like to do? Feel free to comment!

D.C. Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon

Post by Shannon

I love running! It is one of my favorite things to do.

One of my goals is to run a half marathon after every baby we have. I ran the Provo City Half Marathon after our first little girl, and my little sister and I plan to run the Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon in Washington D.C. this time.

It is on March 17. Less than two months away!

I'm excited, but a little nervous. I've only run five times total since our baby was born in August (two times this week), and my sister is a really good runner.

I'm taking a different training approach this time.

After we had our first baby I went walking or running for about an hour a day. It was hard because I had so much weight to lose. My knees hurt and my stomach hurt a lot (I had a c-section).

This time, I am working on losing the weight first, then running. So far it's working! I've lost about 45 pounds since she was born in August by eating five times a day, doing the Insanity & Turbo Fire workouts, and drinking Shakeology every day.

I ran just over 5 1/2 miles last Saturday, and felt great! Losing the weight first while building up my endurance with the other workouts has helped me so much.

My plan now is to continue doing the Turbo Fire workouts that I started on January 2 and run three times a week until the race.

Wish me luck! :)

Vote for Frederick B!

This guy is pretty much amazing! I had to post his story on our blog today.

His name is Mark (Frederick B on the Beachbody site). He lost 44 pounds and went from 27% body fat to 12% after doing P90X. The most amazing part is that he did this program after having hip replacement surgery!

He already won $1,000 in the monthly Beachbody challenge, and now he is a finalist in the quarterly Beachbody Challenge. He needs lots of votes to win the quarterly competition ($5,000)! Let's help him! The best part is he is planning to donate the $5,000 to the Mid Atlantic Make-A-Wish Foundation! In the past 25 years he has raised over $40,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation through their triathlon in Bethany Beach, DE. He wants to help children who are sick, and make their dreams come true.

If you have a Beachbody account, you can skip this part.

If not, click on this link to open a new window and create your free account to be able to vote:

Then visit this link to vote. Scroll down to the pictures of the guys, and vote for Frederick B! You can vote for one woman and one man daily:

Voting is once a day for seven days. So vote every day if you can! You can vote once every 24 hours!

Let's help him win!

Recipe Wednesday: Slow-Cooker Lasagna & Spinach Salad

This is a quick and easy dish when you want to eat healthy, but you don't have much time! Taken from the Sparkpeople Cookbook

Makes 8 Servings:
1 heaping cup per serving

25 Minutes to Prepare; 4 hours to cook

1 pound ground beef, 96% lean
1/4 tsp red pepper flakes
2 tsp dried thyme
One 24-ounce jar low-sodium marinara sauce
One 3/4 pound eggplant, unpeeled, diced (2 cups) (I didn't add this, but you can if you want)
15 ounces part-skim ricotta cheese
1 cup shredded Italian five-cheese blend
1/4 cup egg substitute (or 1 egg white)
1 tbsp chopped fresh parsley
6 no-boil lasagna noodles

1. In a skillet over moderate heat, brown the ground beef and drain any excess fat. Stir in red pepper flakes, thyme, tomato sauce, eggplant, and 1 1/4 cup water.

2. In a mixing bowl, combine the ricotta, shredded cheese blend, egg substitute, and parsley.

3. Coat the inside of the slow cooker with non-stick cooking spray. Place enough meat sauce in the slow cooker to cover the bottom. Top with 2 or 3 lasagna noodles (break them up as needed) to cover the meat sauce. Repeat layer.

4. Top the second layer with all of the cheese mixture and finish with a top layer of the remaining meat sauce.

5. Cover and set the slow cooker on low. Cook for 3 1/2 to 4 hours.

**Tip- I make my sauce ahead of time in bulk and put it in the freezer. Then, when I'm ready I just defrost it and put it together. Takes me a max of 10 minutes to make this and put it in the crock pot!

per serving: 271 calories, 10.2 g total fat, 56.6 mg cholesterol, 283.8 mg sodium 18 g total carbs, 1.6 g dietary fiber, 24.8 g protein

Enjoy!

A Day in the Life- Sometimes it's hard

Post by Shannon

I don't think weight loss is easy. For some people it is, but for me it's not. I think it takes consistency, effort and dedication.

I didn't lose weight because I have good genes or I am lucky. I worked hard at it every day, and it gradually came off. I watched what I ate, exercised every day, and didn't give up; even when it was hard.

I had a baby in August and wanted to lose my baby weight as fast as I could. I wanted to lose weight to have energy and feel good about myself again. I wanted to do this to be the best wife and mom I could be. I also want to be able to run a half marathon in March. It wasn't so much about being skinny, but being healthy and fit.

The first picture on 10-15-11 was about two months after our baby was born. The second one taken in January was just under five months after she was born.

Since 1-4, I have lost a little more weight. Here are my stats so far.

Totals weight lost since our baby was born in August:  44 lbs. (this includes the baby and water weight)

Totals since I started the Beachbody challenge at the end of Sept.:

Weight lost - 27 lbs.
Inches off my waist:  6.5"
Inches off my hips:  4"
Inches of my arm:  1"
Inches off my legs:  3"
Body fat lost:  4.3%

I like Beachbody programs because I don't have a lot of time to go to the gym. They give you a meal plan with each workout program. This helped me a lot. It gave me guidelines on which exercises to do and what to eat. It helped speed my weight loss along. I have been losing between 1-3 pounds per week since I started.

I didn't plan on being a Beachbody coach or selling these programs when I started. As I learned more about Beachbody and saw how it changed my life, I wanted to help others do the same.

I love helping people better their lives. I love motivating people and cheering them on! I'm excited to help others on their journey to becoming healthy and fit!

How to Lose 30 Pounds and Keep it Off!

The National Weight Control Registry did a study of people who lost 30 pounds or more and kept it off...

Those people did three things:

1. Worked out at home
2. Weighed themselves regularly
3. Ate breakfast

Let's get going everyone!

We are 14 days into the New Year. If you haven't started a plan to help you with your exercise and healthy eating, now is the time to start!

WEEKEND CHALLENGE- Don't drink your calories

Post by Shannon

The other night Patrick and I went to dinner with people that Patrick works with. We went to a nice place, and everyone on our table ordered a drink except the lady who sat next to me.

The lady next to me whispered, "I don't drink my calories."

When she said that I looked at my raspberry lemonade... She was right I shouldn't have waisted calories on lemonade. We had salads/soups, dinner rolls, a meal and dessert. I shouldn't have waisted calories on a drink too.

So the challenge for this weekend is going to be hard for some people, but we're challenging you not to drink you not to drink your calories.

You'll save money and calories! Let us know how it goes!

Have a great weekend!

Workout Review: Insanity

Post by Shannon

Every Thursday we review a Beachbody workout. Today's review is Insanity.

I am a big fan of Insanity! I love the workouts. They are fun and upbeat. The moves aren't too difficult, but you get a great workout. I've done the whole program twice now, and both times I loved it!

Facts about Insanity:

-It has a lot of cardio.
-60 days.
-It is AWESOME for losing weight.
-10 workouts.
-There are A LOT of pushups!
-You don't need any equipment except for an optional Yoga mat.
-A heart rate monitor is very helpful.
-Workouts are 35-55 minutes.
-It is more upbeat than P90X.
-It has a lot of interval training.

Overall, this is a really fun workout if you like aerobics, track drills, or jumping. This one is for a shorter time period and the workouts are shorter in the first month. This is great for losing weight, but not as good for getting toned or ripped like P90X.

A Day in the Life- Working Out With Kids

Post by Shannon

Before we had kids, it was so easy to work out! I didn't realize how easy I had it! I'd go sleep for 8-9 hours (continuously), wake up early and go exercise. The hardest part was getting myself to wake up early (6 a.m.) before work at 8 a.m. But that doesn't seem so hard now!

Now that we have kids, it's another story! Some times we don't get much sleep (our baby is 5 months and the older one is 2 1/2). It's hard when you only get 4-5 hours a sleep to wake up and exercise. Some times I feel like laying in bed and not getting up... On those days I end up exercising when the kids are awake.

Exercise when they are awake can be a challenge in itself! The older one wants to exercise with me. We've tripped over each other a few times! The baby cries a lot... I love them, but it's a lot easier when they're asleep!

So my motivation to work out in the morning is to have a few minutes of quiet time before the kids wake up.

My motivation for exercise is to have energy to keep up with my cute little girls! I want to be able to run around the park, play dolls, have a tea party, make a snowman, etc.

My goal is to be a fun, in shape mom, and that means I need to exercise each day! Even if it's hard to fit it in some days.

My Weight Loss Story

Post by Shannon

This is me. This is my actual weight loss progress from October 15, 2011 to January 4, 2012. I wish I had a picture from the day I started Beachbody on September 26, but to be honest, I didn't really want to take a photo of myself at that time. I felt embarrassed of my weight.

I had a baby at the beginning of August 2011 via c-section. Most of my pictures from the beginning of August to this photo on October 15 have me holding a baby to cover my stomach. I didn't feel good about how I looked at all.

This was my second c-section. Last time I had a baby, I had about 60 pounds to lose (I gained 15 in my first year of marriage and 45 during my pregnancy). It took me just over a year to lose it. This time I was sure I wouldn't gain as much, but I ended up gaining about 56 (6 before I got pregnant and 50 during pregnancy).

I am very happy with my progress so far, and I owe it all to the Insanity workout and Shakeology.

Total weight lost so far- 42 pounds since I had my baby in August and 25 pounds since I started the Beachbody program on Sept. 26.

Total body fat lost:  3.7%

Inches Lost since Sept. 26:

-6 in. off my waist
-4 in. off my hips
-2 in. off my legs

I have noticed the biggest difference in the last month since I started drinking a Shakeology drink every day. I didn't think it would make much of a difference, but it really has.

In the last month I lost 7 pounds from Dec. 5 to Jan. 2, and that's the hardest time of the year to lose weight! It was because I was drinking Shakeology. I've noticed a huge difference, and I feel great. I have more energy, my hair and nails feel stronger and my sugar cravings have gone way down. I highly recommend it. I really like the chocolate flavor. I'm not a big fan of the greenberry one, but my husband, Patrick, is.

Click on this link if you'd like to learn more or order Shakeology.

If you order Home Direct, you can get free shipping. The best part is having a money back guarantee, even if you use the whole bag. I think that's awesome.

I love promoting Beachbody because I use their products and love them. They really work.

So that's my story. I love Beachbody. It's helped me so much on my weight loss goals, and that's why I want to help other reach theirs!

Have a great weekend!

WEEKEND CHALLENGE- Keep Track

Post by Shannon

I don't know about you, but my biggest challenge is the weekends. I tend to eat really well during the week and then blow it on the weekends. I usually eat too much sugar and not enough vegetables.

I am a fan of food journals/diaries. I think they are great. The first time I kept one I was surprised at what I ate. I didn't realize the extra bites or tastes I had throughout the day. Those really add up!

Although food journals are great, it is hard to keep one every day, all the time. So our challenge to our blog readers this week is to keep a food journal just for the weekend. Just Saturday and Sunday. Doing this will keep you motivated during the hardest time of the week.

Of course you can continue throughout the week, but keep one for just two days this weekend. Let us know how it went on Monday!

Happy Weekend! It's Friday!!

Our Introduction to Beachbody

Post by Shannon

Patrick and I were introduced to Beachbody through P90X. I wanted to try it because I was tired of not seeing results, and Patrick was just curious to see what I was doing!

Someone I knew completed the program, and looked great. So I thought I'd give it a try. I did the full 90- day program, and I was hooked! I used the meal planner and did all of the workouts. I thought it was an awesome program. I was able to lose weight faster than when I was just walking and running. I was also able to tone my whole body.

I loved doing it at home especially since I had a baby several months before. I also loved that it gave me direction to know which exercises to do when; and what to eat and when. This helped a lot. I used to go to the gym, but I didn't know which exercises to do and which order I should do them. This program gave me a lot of direction.

Doing P90X helped me reach my goal of running a half marathon about 11 months after my baby was born. Since I was able to lose weight easier, I was able to run better and faster. I ran about 3 times a week while doing the P90X. I also did my long runs each week.

Patrick and I are big fans of P90X. We know it works and love our results!

Recipe Day: Lemon Chicken with Spinach Pasta

Every Wednesday we will be posting a yummy recipe we've tried! We tried this one last night. It is really good!

It was taken from the Sparkpeople Cookbook. It's only $17.97 on Amazon! Click on the link to see it. I love this cookbook!

Email us if you have any questions about this recipe:  golladayfit@gmail.com

Lemon Chicken with Spinach Pasta

You can mix up the sauce and marinade for this tasty dish before work, then cook the chicken and pasta when you get home. Thirty minutes and about 350 calories later, you have a filling, healthy meal. Add a serving of steamed broccoli and a cup of milk for a full meal.

Makes 4 Servings:
3-4 oz. chicken and 1 c pasta per serving

1 Hour 15 min. to prepare and cook

1 lb boneless, skinless chicken breasts
1 small onion, sliced thin
1 lemon, zested and juiced
3 Tbsp white wine or rice-wine vinegar
1 Tbsp olive oil
1/4 tsp salt
1/2 tsp white or black pepper
8 oz. whole-wheat penne
4 cups spinach, washed and trimmed

1. Prepare a glass baking dish with nonstick cooking spray. Trim chicken of any remaining fat. Place chicken between two sheets of plastic wrap or parchment paper and use a meat mallet, rolling pin, or the bottom of a heavy pan to pound the meat until it is 1/2 to 3/4 inch thick. Slice each breast into four strips and place into the prepared baking dish. Sprinkle the sliced onions rings over the chicken.

2. Prepare the marinade. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the lemon zest, lemon juice, vinegar, oil, salt and pepper. Pour half the mixture over the chicken and onions and reserve the second half for the sauce. Marinate in the fridge for 30 min. up to 8 hours (we marinated it over night).

3. Preheat oven to 350 F. Cover with foil and bake chicken and onions for 30 min.

4. While the chicken is cooking, cook the pasta according to the package directions until al dente (firm to the bite). Reserve 1/4 cup of the pasta water before draining the pasta. Return the pasta and the reserved pasta water to the pan. Add the spinach, cooking until it wilts. Add the reserved marinade mixture and heat just until warm. Serve with cooked chicken.
